Finding Your Dream

Umbrellas in the sky

What is your dream? Remember when little, people would ask what we wanted to be when we grew up? Children would answer, a doctor or a nurse, a policeman, a fireman, a farmer, a fighter-jet pilot, a ballerina and so on. I am curious what the statistics are for dreams children have coming true in their adult life. I have heard numerous times young adults go off to college or university often to find out, for various reasons, they do not want to continue what they had set out to do or to study. Often students graduate, receive their diploma, never to start out on the path they’d envisioned, only to go a completely opposite direction.

Dreams are as individual as we are. Many factors play into whether we truly pursue our dreams. Family, financial status, health issues, responsibilities or even just the realization of the risk involved. Some are supported in their hopes and dreams, others forced to choose a path they would not have otherwise and even due to circumstances beyond control end up in a career path, field or job they somehow just landed in. Then there are those which do not fit into the box. They do not go the expected way. I have asked others what dream they have and sometimes people pause and then say they do not have a dream. An example of a dream for some women I have spoken with is to be a wife and mother even when the world in general does not believe that is enough. It is more than enough if that is your dream and what is most fulfilling.

I am the oldest of six children. I did not have an older sibling to look up to or lead the way. When I was a teenager, I wished to be an Olympic Champion in Figure Skating. I mentioned this to my parents and at the far too old age of fourteen I began taking figure skating lessons. I enjoyed skating immensely. I felt so free gliding across the glass like ice, jumping, spinning and expressing my artistic side. I would often dream at night about skating. It was frequently on my mind. I had the privilege of meeting many Olympic Champions along the way. I also enjoyed singing although, did not have any idea how to go about that. I still love to sing! When I was a young adult, I inspired to become an Interior Designer. When the opportunity presented itself to go away to college and study Interior Design, I did not even realize that it was possible for me. Until that point, I did not grasp there were ways to start out in search of a dream far away from home.

For most of my adult life I have dreamed about having a very English Style Tea Room and Gift Shoppe. I have gone to Tea in several Tea Rooms near the Twin Cities. I worked in two very lovely Tea Rooms, both times in the Gift Shoppe connected with the Tea Room. I collected Tea Books throughout the years, hoping that someday I will have my very own Tea Room and Gift Shoppe. When working at the Tea Room Gift Shoppes, I purchased Tea Books such as “Tea at the Ritz” and “Tea at the Savoy” and wished to experience having Formal Tea as well as High Tea at the Ritz and the Savoy in London, England. It seemed like a faraway wish. I am thrilled to say, after waiting many years, I finally experienced both Tea Rooms in October 2018. I decided to travel to London, England for the very first time. I had waited so long to travel there. I just knew I would absolutely love it. I did! For me it was a Dream Come True.

At this very moment I am writing, so much has changed in the past few weeks in the world. It appears a complete different one than previously. I am still reaching for the dreams I have and believe will be fulfilled. What about you? What are your dreams?
